LAN JDL

2021 event

For a second year, I've been approached by LAN JDL (the biggest Quebec city gaming event) to create an announcement title with the theme "Multi-Gaming". They wanted to present the most popular video games of this year into one animation title.

THE PROJECT

A New Edition of JDL

I can't deny I had a lot of fun working with the good folks at JDL. The opening show I did back in 2019 has been extremely rewarding and was an awesome challenge.  The best? I'm extremely grateful to have made new friends along the way.  We stayed in touch, played games together, and for a second year, we decided to work again and create a new opening show for the event.

THE CONCEPT

Present loved aspects of games to create nostalgia.

Because the target audience is avid video game enthusiasts, I presented the idea of cherry-picking important elements from popular games. The goal was to make the audience feel nostalgia, to bring back epic memories from popular franchises. These memories can either be loved gameplay features, a quote, a popular item or boss fight, or a story moment.

EXAMPLE

PUBG

To give an example, The loved and extremely popular Battle Royal genre has seen its extreme rise in popularity with the game Player Unknown Battle Ground (P.U.B.G). This game is an experience similar in many ways to the book and movie series Hunger Games. If you achieve to win the arena, your victory is rewarded with a screen written "Winner, Winner, chicken diner!". I pictured this beloved quote in one of the shots from the short sequence.

EXAMPLE

Fortnite

Fortnite is another popular Battle Royal. One aspect of this game is known by every gamer out there, playing the game or not, and it's its flying bus. When a match begins, you jump in a flying bus to parachute into the arena.

Having a roommate can be helpful

Fortnite has been a worldwide hit, becoming the most-watched game online in 2020. It was important to have a shot about this game in the sequence, and even more important to pay homage to the well-known flying bus. Problem is, it's quite difficult to find this kind of specific model online. Lucky me, during its production I had a roommate working as a 3d modeler. In exchange for some beers, he created the model I imagined and a bunch of workbenches and lifts. Here are frames from the short, beauty shots of the props, and early shader and lighting styleframes

Team Fight Tactics

Team Fight Tactics has created a rise in popularity for auto-chest games. Created by Riot Games, for a little while T.F.T took the world of live streams by surprise by becoming the top streamed game on Twitch.tv. One graphical element you encounter at each phase of a match is your enemies' portal. This core graphical element brings one player or yourself into a death-match between your and their heroes.
